More in state expected to travel for holiday
Friday, 28, May 2010

More Californians are expected to hit the highways, and take to the skies, this Memorial Day weekend, driven by increased confidence in the recovering economy and weariness of staying home for the holidays.According to AAA's annual travel survey, nearly 4 million Californians will travel more than 50 miles from home over the upcoming three-day weekend. That's a 7.8 percent increase over last year when many chose to hunker down at home. But this year, that attitude seems to be easing, said Cynthia Harris, a AAA Northern California spokeswoman.

"With some trepidation, people are starting to feel more comfortable about traveling and taking vacations they may have postponed," she said. "Regardless of continued concern about the economy, there seems to be a renewed confidence."As usual, most of the California travelers, about 3.2 million, will drive - an 8.3 percent increase over last year, according to the survey. Another 360,000 will fly - a rise of 4.9 percent from 2009. About 5.4 percent more - 260,000 - will travel by train, bus or boat.
