An organization that has worked for years to redevelop the Carrie Furnace property that once was part of U.S. Steel Corp.'s Homestead Works has take a major step forward.Allegheny County has turned over a 15-acre site at the property to Steel Industry Heritage Corp., and received from it ownership of the hot-metal bridge onto the site.No money changed hands in the swap, which will allow work to begin on what is the largest undeveloped brownfield site in the county.
August Carlino, president of the Steel Industry Heritage group, and others have been waiting for about 20 years for action to occur at the site along the Monongahela River, primarily in Rankin, Braddock and Swissvale. The Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County approved the action by the steel group to gain ownership of the land with its steel plant furnaces and other structures.
