Paper drops line on fishing industry

A draft discussion paper on the future of recreational fishing in Australia has been released by the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Tony Burke.The Recreational Fishing Advisory Committee, set up to provide expert industry advice to the Government, developed the paper entitled Recreational Fishing in Australia – 2010 and Beyond.Committee members, who included experts and industry leaders, met with recreational fishers across the country to hear their views.
Mr Burke said the Committee told him industry wanted the importance of recreational fishing to be better promoted, as well as an industry plan to help manage the nation’s fish resources.He said the Government would continue to help the sector plan ahead to ensure recreational fishing sustainability.“Recreational fishing is a vital industry for many regional and rural areas that is enjoyed by millions of Australians, providing jobs and injecting funds into local economies,” Mr Burke said.He said the Government was providing up to $500,000 to implement a coordinated national data collection project for recreational fishing.
