Newspapers pitch for Canberra dollars
Friday, 18, June,2010
THE newspaper industry has begun its first concerted campaign to convince the federal government to spend more money on the medium as Canberra lifts its advertising in the lead-up to the federal election. At a meeting attended by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott on Tuesday night, newspaper executives launched their bid to get more federal advertising dollars to be spent on newspapers.
Politicians and their chiefs of staffs who attended the event at Parliament House were left with a copy of a specially printed edition of a fictitious newspaper, Capital Post, which sings the virtues of a medium that commands more than $3.5 billion in annual advertising revenue.Newspaper publishers are concerned that they are not getting their fair share of the advertising dollars that are flowing back into the media industry following the federal government's return to higher levels of advertising.
