Carolyn McCall to quit Guardian Media Group
Monday, 29, March,2010

THE chief executive of Britain’s Guardian Media Group – publishers of titles such as The Guardian andThe Observer – has quit just weeks after selling 31 of its regional newspapers.Carolyn McCall, who has overseen a transformation from profit to loss at the company in the past 18 months, is reportedly ready to leave media for the glamour world of cut-price airfares.Ms McCall said overnight the role of chief executive at easyJet was a “once in a lifetime opportunity”. Her decision to leave GMG will shock staff as well as the British newspaper industry.

GMG has been battling for its very survival while retaining the journalistic quality for which its flagship newspapers, The Guardian and The Observer, have become known around the world. The Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger worked with Ms McCall to create what they described as a “world-leading liberal voice”.As part of that strategy The Guardian tapped anti-Bush sentiment to achieve a strong online presence in the United States, continued to publish a weekly newspaper that is available around the world and became respected as a genuine leader of newspapers in digital markets.
