Pretty Lights works to free music industry

If your favorite artist has given away their album for free on the Internet, you likely have Pretty Lights -- aka Derek Vincent Smith -- to thank. The Colorado-bred producer helped pioneer the artists willfully giving away their album for free on the Internet business model when he distributed his debut album, "Taking Up Your Precious Time," through his website in 2006. It was there for the taking, no strings attached, and he didn't even ask for an e-mail address. You're welcome.
Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Girl Talk and a slew of others followed suit, as did Smith with his next two records, "Filling Up the Sitting Skies" (2008) and "Passing By Behind Your Eyes" (2009). They're still there on his website for the taking, but after haggling with management (and losing), he now asks for an e-mail address in exchange for the files. The strategy has helped bring exposure to Smith, who now makes enough money from touring to support his career.
