N.Y. Manufacturers Post Jobs Increase
Thursday, 20, May 2010
New York manufacturers stepped up hiring over the past month to a pace not seen since 2004, according to a Federal Reserve survey released Monday. That bodes well for other industries since manufacturing jobs are often seen as a barometer of the overall labor market. An index gauging changes in the number of employees for New York manufacturers grew to 22.37 in May, marking five consecutive months of growth, according to the Fed's monthly Empire State Manufacturing Survey, which polled about 100 New York state manufacturers between May 1 and May 15.
One New York manufacturer that is expanding is Ares Printing & Packaging in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. "We are giving [clients] no excuse to shop overseas," said George Filippidis, owner of Ares, which makes pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food packaging and employs 110 people. The family-owned company added 10 employees this year and plans to hire another 10 by the end of the year. ARES also plans to open a new factory in Queens later this year with an additional 20 to 50 employees.
