Legislators representing northwestern Connecticut are split on a bill that would raise the hotel tax by three percent. The House of Representatives passed An Act Concerning a Regional Hotel Tax that would raise the tax from 12 percent to 15 percent. The House passed this bill by a vote of 88 to 50 on April 29.If this bill becomes law, one-third of the additional tax money would go the town in which the hotel is located.
The other two-thirds of the additional tax money would go to a regional planning organization.State Rep. Roberta Willis, a 64th district Democrat who represents Cornwall, Goshen, Salisbury, Sharon and Torrington, voted against the bill. She equated the bill as a deterrent to people staying in hotels. At the same time, Willis said she supports the piece of the bill dealing with regionalization.
