Video-Game Makers Aiming High With New Shooters
Friday, 18, June, 2010

Violent shoot-em-up games have long been a staple of the video game business, but a walk through the industry's largest trade show this week suggests that publishers still see plenty of room for growth in the category.Compared to other games, combat shooters were drawing the most buzz by far at the E3 Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. Fans are eagerly anticipating the debuts of titles like "Call of Duty: Black Ops," "Medal of Honor" and "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier" later this year. Other titles such as "Homefront" and "Bulletstorm" will hit the market early next year.

They will join other sci-fi themed shooters such as "Halo Reach," "Crysis 2" and "Gears of War 3"--all due out by the holidays. The target in everyone's crosshairs is Activision Blizzard Inc. ATVI). The Santa Monica, Calif.-based game publisher has enjoyed phenomenal success with its "Call of Duty" franchise. The latest iteration--"Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2"--was the top-selling console game in the U.S last year, according to data from NPD Group.
