Game Industry NewsUTV plans US gaming initiativeOne of Bollywood’s largest entertainment groups is making a bold play to become India’s first global gaming company with plans to launch an online multiplayer game in the US before June. UTV Software Communications, part-owned by Disney, is also making games for the PlayStation and Xbox consoles as well as for mobile phones, according to Ronnie Screwvala, company founder and chief executive.The group is set to launch ‘Mytheon’, its first “massively multi-player online role playing game” for the US market. The game allows players to engage in a fantasy world that pitches them against others on the internet globally. Screwvala said that, while this genre was highly successful in Asia, generating multibillion-dollar market capitalisations for companies in China, online games were in their infancy in the US.He told the Financial Times that the move reflected the increasing importance of Asia versus western markets in the global games market - China is emerging alongside Japan and South Korea as a huge market and content generator in its own right with India set to follow suit.
