With guns blazing, the long-awaited “Red Dead Redemption” is riding into stores. The Western-themed video game, which goes on sale today, was largely developed in Carlsbad by Rockstar San Diego. Rockstar, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive with operations around the world, is best known for the “Grand Theft Auto” series of games. The arrival of “Red Dead Redemption” with its stunning vistas, keen dialogue and, of course, graphic violence comes at a crucial time for the struggling Take-Two and the gaming industry, which has seen its sales decline amid the recession.
The anticipation for the game might not match that of its urban underworld counterpart, “Grand Theft Auto,” but devoted gamers are waiting to see if “Red Dead Redemption” can bolster the moribund Western genre. The early buzz is glowing. The New York Times has called the game a “tour de force.” GamePro, a review site, said it was “arguably Rockstar’s finest effort to date” and gave it a five out of five stars.Charley Yap, a sales associate at Best Buy in Mission Valley, said customers have been steadily asking about the game for the past six months. The Mature-rated game is available for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
