Fashion Industry NewsPVM hosts a quick look at city fashion industryTalk about fashion forward. Place Ville Marie, in the run-up to its 50th anniversary in 2012, has mounted an exhibition celebrating Montreal's fashion industry.Since it was erected in 1962, the cross-shaped skyscraper designed by I.M. Pei has become an icon of Montreal. At the launch of the exhibition, So Many Years, So Much to Show, designers, educators and business people talked about their memories of the building and their connection to it. "It's the most beautiful building in Montreal,'' said designer Michel Desjardins, whose long mink-trimmed coat, winner of an award for fur design in 1997, is featured among the displays, which date back to 1850 but are mostly focused on recent decades.He remembers La Ruelle, a section of the mall that featured the latest imports from France.Today, the mall is mostly major chains, many of them Montreal-based, like Laura, Le Château, Cassis, Tristan and more. Reitmans and Browns, among the first retailers to set up shop at PVM, are still there.
