Possible setback for contractors in construction industry
Friday, 04, June 2010
Details of cuts in housing have not been announced in an official statement, but have however been quietly unveiled on the Homes and Communities Agency website, a non departmental body. The housing cuts amount to £230 million which is very bad news for contractors in the construction industry. This news and the way it was announced has undermined David Cameron’s pledge to be open with voters after making accusations that the last government were not open and honest about public spending.
In a bid to rebuild trust in the politicians, David Cameron was due to set time limits for Whitehall departments to publish details of major spending. This new announcement of housing cuts is a major blow for contractors in the construction industry, with funding for 7000 new homes being cut from the budget. The affordable housing programme budget has been reduced by £100 million which would have been used to build 2,223 new properties. Developments are helped to get under way by the Kickstart project which has had cuts of £50 million meaning that approximately 560 new homes won’t be built.
