Construction industry warned of crisis

Queensland has lost another 4200 jobs in the construction and housing sector since November. The job losses are on top of the 20,000 full-time jobs lost between August 2008 and November 2009, according to the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA).In some regions the housing and construction sector has lost more than 50 per cent of its workforce, said UDIA Queensland president Warren Harris. The job losses have prompted a call for regional mayors to establish development taskforces to address the continuing erosion of activity in the major employment sector.
Mr Harris said another 27,000 jobs are at risk while thousands of others could be reduced to part-time positions."The UDIA has been aware for some time now that significant declines in housing approvals, particularly in attached dwelling approvals, would inevitably lead to significant job losses throughout the state."We have been warning local authorities and the state government of this for almost 18 months but our warnings were not treated seriously," Mr Harris said. The far north of Queensland has lost 54 per cent of construction jobs since 2008, and the West Moreton region near Brisbane 52 per cent.
