NSW timber workers wind up company to get paid
Monday, 10, May, 2010

Union officials said yesterday they believed the Federal Court victory was the first time a union had successfully liquidated a company in order to secure entitlements for employees.Employees of Harwood Resources in the southern NSW town of Tumut were sacked in April last year after the company effectively ran out of money to pay the workers. Some of the employees had worked at the hardwood mill for more than 30 years, with their union estimating they were owed $400,000 in entitlements and about $90,000 in superannuation.

Following a union blockade and occupation of the site, an agreement was reached to put the company into administration. The Federal Court decision to grant the union application to place the company in liquidation means the 11 employees will have access to payments from the federal government's general entitlements scheme. The Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union's forestry and furnishing products division said it hoped workers would receive about $250,000 from the federal scheme.
