EU chemical regulation makes global impact

A European Community regulation on chemicals and their safe use could become an important element of global law in the next 10 years, the executive director of the European Chemicals Agency, or ECHA, said Thursday.“In our daily work we already see REACH having a global impact now,” Geert Dancet said at the second Helsinki Chemicals Forum in Finland, using the common acronym for the regulation his agency manages.

“On our visits to the United States and Canada we saw how the North American chemicals industry is implementing REACH because they export chemicals to the EU.”The regulation on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemical substances, or REACH, came into force June 1, 2007. It requires notification of all existing and new substances, either as a finished compound or in preparation, manufactured or imported into the European Union in quantities above one ton per year.
