Beverage Industry NewsFruit based beverages and drinksOne of the rapidly growing sectors is beverages (not including tea, coffee etc. and alcoholic beverages). This sector is estimated at over Rs 7,500 crore and is dominated by carbonated soft drinks with almost 80% share. However, other products, especially fruit juices, nectars, fruit beverages and drinks, powdered ready-to-make beverages etc. are growing in popularity and manufacturers are coming up with a lot of variants to sustain the growth and interest in them. Fruit syrups and squashes have not showed much growth as the emphasis is more on the ready-to-drink. Only the powdered instant beverages are sustaining some growth because of their cost-effectiveness and their low volume and weight. The fruit juices have started making impact only after the mango-based beverages first made this category popular. Slowly many giants entered the juice market and now not only there are Indian manufacturers in aseptic packages, many imported products from far away places like Australia and South Africa have been made available in various packages including glass bottles. Indians have imbibed all these juices and drinks quite easily although only some major fruit flavours were preferred. Even today, the beverages dominate the market with almost Rs 1,250 crore while the juice market is only about Rs 350 crore.
