UAW looks to grow beyond auto industry
Monday, 21, June 2010
More than one-fourth of the United Auto Workers union's current 355,000 members don't have anything to do with manufacturing or the auto industry, where the union got its start 75 years ago.Casino workers, adjunct college professors, teaching assistants and health care workers gathered last week at Cobo Center in Detroit for the union's convention represent the UAW's best shot at growth, newly elected President Bob King said.
"The areas that I think we have the opportunity ... for some really high growth are higher education and gaming," King said. The union represents about 100,000 nonmanufacturing workers. That's about the same number of UAW-represented autoworkers at General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler Group LLC. The other UAW members work for auto suppliers or other manufacturers."I believe our future will lie mostly outside of automotive," said Tiffany Cowger, who works for Health Alliance Plan and has been a member of UAW Local 600 in Dearborn since 2003.
