Byrne Questions Federal Government on Fishery
Monday, 26, April 2010

Newfoundland MP Gerry Byrne wants to know why the federal government is willing to bail out banks and the auto industry, but is not interested in providing assistance to the fishery. Byrne says the fishing industry is suffering directly from poor market conditions caused by the global recession. Meanwhile, the provincial government is refusing to bridge the gap between the price of crab put forward by the fishermen's union and processors.

The FFAW and Association of Seafood Producers had asked for government funding to bridge the gap between what the fishermen want and what processors are willing to pay. Fisheries Minister Clyde Jackman says government cannot provide subsidies to the fishing industry because of the risk of trade action. He says he thinks inventory financing has merit and is worth pursuing for next year's fishery. He says they simply can't do it this year because of the legal issues, and that the parties must reach a compromise on their own.
