Bill proposes stricter auto industry rules

A Manitoba MP plans to submit a private member's bill in Parliament next week that could lead to stricter standards on the auto industry in reporting safety issues, and prevent former Transport Canada employees from working in the auto industry for one year after leaving the ministry.The proposed changes to the Motor Vehicle Safety Act are being put forth by Jim Maloway, NDP MP for Elmwood-Transcona, and follow several high-profile incidents of unintended acceleration in Toyota Motor Corp.
vehicles that raised questions about how quickly automakers are required to make safety issues known to federal officials and the public."I just feel that it is about time that politicians introduce consumer-friendly legislation rather than information that has been vetted by lobbyists before it gets to the floor of the House," Mr. Maloway said in an interview.But even consumer critics say some of the measures contained in Mr. Maloway's proposed bill are unrealistic and may lead to unnecessary confusion.
