Auto industry unaffected by recalls
Thursday, 04, March 2010
The Thai automotive industry is not affected by recent vehicle recalls of giant automakers in overseas markets, said Adisak Rohitasune, vice-president of the Federation of Thai Industries."The recalls did not have a global impact, only in some countries like the United States," said Mr Adisak. "In Thailand, the incidents have not eroded the confidence in car companies."Thailand's automotive production this year is projected to grow by 40% to 1.4 million vehicles, the same level as in 2008, Mr Adisak said. Production last year fell by 30%.
He added that the US auto market still expected higher sales despite the concern over vehicle recalls. Meanwhile, the global auto industry this year is expected to grow by 3.5% from 63 million vehicles last year. The Japanese carmaker Toyota Motor Corp recently recalled more than 8 million vehicles worldwide with defects linked to unintended acceleration."The recall is not considered a crisis to the auto industry," Mr Adisak said. "The real impact on the auto industry is the financial crisis, but conditions have started to recover since late last year."
